About CiteGenie

CiteGenie is a citation and source-finding platform for students, researchers, and writers. We help you generate citations in 9,000+ styles, find supporting academic papers for a claim, and verify whether a citation actually points at a real, retrievable source.

What CiteGenie does

We do four things, all anchored in primary academic data rather than guesswork:

Why we exist

Generative AI tools fabricate citations at a high rate: studies have documented hallucination rates between 30% and 90% across general-purpose chatbots. CiteGenie was built to invert that — every reference we return is grounded in a real record from a recognised academic index.

Where our data comes from

We do not maintain our own bibliographic database. Every citation we produce is constructed from metadata returned by one or more of the following authoritative sources:

Crossref OpenAlex Semantic Scholar PubMed (NCBI) arXiv Open Library WorldCat

Formatting is performed via the open-source Citation Style Language project — the same engine used by Zotero, Mendeley, and Papers — using the canonical style files maintained on GitHub. We do not rewrite or paraphrase reference output.

How we keep things accurate

See our editorial process page for the full methodology, including how we source claims in our learning content, how we update style guides when official manuals are revised, and how we correct errors.

Who we are

CiteGenie is independently operated. Our editorial work is performed by people who write, edit, and verify academic content; we credit named authors on every article and link to their profiles. Meet the team on our editorial team page.
